about

Excuse my pretentiousness here, but the sentiment in this song seems to echo something D.H.Lawrence wrote about love. It's one of the most melodic, sweetest sounding tunes from The Lioness album, but the lyric is heavy and non-triumphant about relationships. I always get the feeling that Jason Molina was staring things unflinchingly, straight in the face. You don't have to agree with his conclusions, but it's hard to not be thrilled by his thoughtfulness, his sincerity, the poetry of the whole thing. It sounds strange, uncertain, coming out of my mouth. It lacks the gravitas of the original. What I do like about this recording of ours, is listening to the other musicians. The way Jonny picks everything up with the ride cymbals, the ascending melody hook that Franic plays on the bass, and Simon Trought on the second guitar, fingerpicking, weaving little melody lines around everything. True to the spirit of Songs Ohia, we didn't do any overdubs here. We played these songs once or twice through, and then recorded, generally keeping the first takes. We'd never played any of them before the day, and haven't played them since. My voice is hard for me to enjoy listening to, but I do enjoy listening to everybody else on these, and i think Simon and Giles got a great, deep, sound out of the band on the day.
