The Old Black Hen I know from that same cd that had the solo versions of Magnolia Electric Company songs on it. It's so nice for me to hear Jonny Helm sing it. Franic plays the melody line from the chorus on mandolin, whereas Jason Molina sings it as 'oo-oo-oohs' in the original version. Jonny really brings something to this. It seems completely appropriate now that we end our album with the line ''every day I lived I was trying to sing the blues the way I find them''. It is tempting to view this is an autobiography, though I don't know whether that is what Molina had in mind when he wrote it. I do know that this is as good a description of what he did, of what he left us, as any.

This is one of the strongest albums by Stanley Brinks and this alone speaks volumes about its quality and merits, since Mr. Brinks's material is always great. The Wave Pictures are doing a terrific job as his backing band and the results are simply breathtaking. This has so many merits that a simple review can not cover. His voice sax and guitar sound is distinctive, yet I find that fans of Hefner, Jonathan Richman, Velvet Underground, Violent Femmes will certainly enjoy this immensely. Vassilis Gonis
